Some interesting concepts, there, from your work in Portland. Actually, I kinda want to say to the elderly Southeast Asian Men, "you go, guys," because our culture HERE is such a "youth entitlement" culture and I am sick of it. It's gotten so once a guy is 30 or 40, he thinks his life is over and he's got to move out of the way of some thoughtless kid who's still being financially supported by his parents. However, my true feeling is that all points of view contribute mightily, young and old, man and woman, etc., and whereas youth has virtually no experience at all, their fresh insights can sometimes move everything forward very rapidly--they break out of the crust. Regarding the "I don't see color," I can see how that throws the baby out with the bath water, to use a cliche (beyond the fact that it is probably hypocritical, anyway), getting rid of negative and false racial stereotypes. Cultures and identities have POSITIVE aspects, too, and sometimes people do forget that. However, the other end of it really makes me mad, too...such as a friend of mine who said with all sincerity, "I really wish I had a culture, but I am white, so I don't!" WHAT?

honey, i got his [miller's] punk ass off the couch today and out to the recycling center to drop off our trash. AND he moved the microwave. i'm almost bowled over by this miniscule effort. but, hey! it's effort nonetheless. let's hope this doesn't become our dark period!

i know how you feel. it's not a good feeling to give in to cynicism. i think you're right on all points. i too believe it's all about political gain, and this makes me so sad. sad for him, that he could be so blind as to want that above all else. [i try to bend my cynicism into something emotional... it's what i do :)]

My concern about how homecoming vets would be treated was based only on what happened after the Vietnam war (by the way, more Vietnam vets died from committing suicide afterwards than were ever killed IN the war). This idea of "not receiving a hero's welcome" had a far greater impact than there simply not being ticker-tape parades. Anti-war sentiment ended up vilifying the very participants in the war (many, if not most of whom had been drafted and therefore were basically unwilling, but they did what they felt they had to do). And this even came out of a time where the majority of the populace had been "hawk" during the war. To me it is logical to think that the same thing could happen with this war, particularly if, instead of being quick, it becomes a very protracted event that lasts for years and years. The region could be very unstabilized, after all, so who knows what all will end up happening there. What if the majority of the people decide that this war is an illegal aggressive act of an immoral administration, it's not a far cry for them to tar the servicemen with the same brush. "You could have deserted. You didn't have to enlist. You didn't have to obey orders." That sort of thing. I really hope it doesn't happen, but on the other hand, it isn't far-fetched.
