So true about the elections in Spain. Maybe that will happen here! (One can only hope.) What an intelligent and perceptive populace of voters they have over there, and your entry was intelligent and perceptive as well!

I will be the first to go to bat for you guys adopting!! You will be good parents because you are good, loving people. The parenting style just has to fit you so that you are comfortable with each other and the kid. And by the way, Baby Bean is becoming totally clingy and moody, so I don't know about all this attachment parenting crap. :-p

i brought up journalcon with miller and he didn't immediately dismiss it so we may just be hanging out soon. also, i think y'all will make awesome parents - and we all know parenting has nothing to do with your sex, it's your priorities and committments and (like you said) your love for your children. adoptive parents get that more than anyone else, i think. we CHOOSE to jump headfirst in the hardest job ever....

Wow, verucaamish, that statement by the anthropolists was GREAT! I'm so glad you presented it. That's what I always like, fighting myth and lies with pure scientific fact. I knew that throughout history and across the globe that there were many different family arrangements other than just the nuclear family, and it seems that some kind of "tribal" set-up was really the most successful in the long run, but I don't really know for sure. Governments like to parcel the people out into the tiniest units possible, they are much weaker that way (kind of how management doesn't like labor to "unionize"). Having people empowered by the strength of the love relationships of their choice and broadly-defined supportive "families" is very good for people, not so good for those who want to control them. Hooray for the anthropologists, their studies are relative to what is going on today.

Very good answer as to why you and Mr. Activism would be qualified to adopt children. I hope the journalism student was impressed! If the children are loved, and KNOW they are loved, then surely that is the major part of it. ROLE MODELS, of each gender, are really all over the place, in the home, among relatives and friends, in the neighborhood, in school, on television, and so on, so I don't think that loving parents have to be expected to be it ALL...the love is the main thing. Bravo!

Barbara Boxer's announced she's against same-sex marriage!? What an election year copout. But I've looked all over the web and can't find an actual quote from her. Do you have a cite other than the Post article? (I'm a constituent and do plan to call her office.)

I agree with you so much about "The Passion of Christ". Billy Graham saw the movie and wept, well I should think so. I'm afraid if I saw it, I'd not only weep, I'd probably vomit (so far the only movie to make me do that was Ken Russell's extremely intense and frightening film "The Devils," which to this day I will not allow there to be a video of it in my house). This will have to be way too intense for anybody, adult or child, Christian or anybody else. And what is the POINT of it, is what I would like to know!
